Statewide Rallies and Activities: Include Long-term Care in Healthcare Reform - It’s Key!

On July 2, 2009, Montana’s Centers for Independent Living and other organizations that serve Montanans with disabilities and seniors teamed up to host a series of simultaneous rallies entitled “The Community Choice Act is KEY to Heath Care Reform.” The rallies were targeted at Senator Max Baucus’ state offices where our message to the Senator was…the Community Choice Act is KEY to Healthcare Reform and we are counting on him to be the KEY to including long term services and supports to healthcare reform, ending institutional bias in the current healthcare model.

Under the current system, low income seniors and people with disabilities on Medicaid are forced into nursing facilities and other institutions when they would prefer in-home services and supports.  The Community Choice Act (H.R.1670 and S. 683) addresses this issue, removing the institutional bias inherent in our system and giving people a real choice to receive services at home.

Every American – including Americans with disabilities and older Americans – should have the right to live in freedom.  No American should be required to give up their freedom in order to get long term services and supports. On July 2nd, these messages was conveyed through hundreds of personal letters written by consumers and advocates and delivered to Senator Baucus’ offices in Helena, Butte, Bozeman, Missoula, Kalispell, Great Falls and Billings. Montana’s rally efforts made national headlines within the disability rights movement.
